Domaine Luneau-Papin is located southeast of Nantes and was founded by Pierre Luneau and Monique Papin. After the Luneau brothers separated in the 90ies in a dispute about the desired way of cultivation, Pierre Luneau and his wife Monique Papin merged their estates and founded the Domaine Luneau-Papin. Since 2005, the family business has been supported by their son Jean-Marie and his wife Marie, who have meanwhile taken over the management of the estate. They started to cultivate the single parcels individually and approached in careful steps more and more the organic cultivation, which is meanwhile certified by the Demeter association. The wines of the domaine are exclusively made of the Melon de Bourgogne, which came to the Loire with Burgundian monks in the 16th century.
The L'Or, the golden wine is the flagship of the Domaine Luneau-Papin. It comes from two sites between the villages of Landreau and Vallet, grown on gneiss and granite on vines over 45 years old at around 500m above sea level. The wine ages for 9-12 months on its lees, which are stirred at regular intervals. The Domaine has bottles of the L'Or until 1976 in the cellar, which impressively prove the maturity potential of this grape variety.
Color
Light straw yellow with green reflections.
Nose
Beneath the cloudy yeasty notes, delicate citrus notes waft like expansive meadows under a morning mist. With increasing aeration, for which the large glass is ideally suited, further citrus and floral aromas reveal themselves like deer in the clearing, until the mist clears and a radiantly beautiful and sun-drenched landscape reveals itself in the goblet.
Mouth
Granite, according to the label, is the leitmotif of Domaine Luneau-Papin's 2019 L'Or. Firm and punchily grounded, the Melon de Bourgogne shows that it obviously needs it a little harder to fully portray its nature. With pulsating pressure on the palate, it has tremendous thrust and rigidly rejects any doubters of the variety. Vertically structured, the acidity softly cloaked by yeasty scents accelerates and accompanies it into the citrus-scented, melt-in-your-mouth finish.
