Wine Description for Oppenheim Chardonnay Alte Reben Trocken 2021 by Kühling-Gillot
- Colour & Appearance
- Radiant, deep golden yellow – a visual promise of concentration and maturity.
- Nose
- Impressively complex: matchstick and flint meet ripe yellow fruit and orange zest. Beneath lies a fascinating layering of vanilla, fresh butter, wild herbs and forest floor. Surprisingly Burgundian with notes of porcini mushrooms and undergrowth – an aromatic profile that invites lingering.
- Palate
- Powerful and demanding, this Chardonnay presents itself with pronounced tannin structure – unusual for the variety and a sign of great ambitions. The texture is dense, almost meaty, with palpable minerality from the calcareous marl. Still young and somewhat closed, but with discernible potential. The moderate alcohol content of 12.5% lends it elegance rather than opulence. This is no accommodating Chardonnay for immediate enjoyment, but a serious, age-worthy wine that demands patience.
- Finish
- Long, mineral and with fine tension. The limestone character of the terroir reveals itself in the saline freshness of the aftertaste.
- Terroir & Origin
- From the amphitheatre-shaped vineyards of Oppenheim, where calcareous marl combined with loess deposits create ideal conditions for Burgundy varieties. A special parcel with solid limestone bedrock ensures slower, harmonious ripening. The pure expression of Oppenheim calcareous marl – far removed from the slate character of Nierstein.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Old vines, consistently thinned and strictly selected. Fermentation and ageing in barriques and tonneaux, half in first-use and half in second-use barrels. This approach imparts structure without oak dominance.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- Porcini mushroom carpaccio with argan oil, quail leg with foie gras filling and Chardonnay sauce, grilled monkfish on the bone with Mediterranean vegetables. Definitely decant and serve in large Burgundy glasses at 12-14°C.
- Special Features
- First vinified in 2012, this wine represents Kühling-Gillot’s most ambitious Chardonnay style. Enormous ageing potential of 8-12 years. A statement wine that proves Rheinhessen can produce world-class Chardonnay.
