Wine description for Gewürztraminer Clos Windsbuhl 2013 from Domaine Zind-Humbrecht

Colour & Appearance
Pale yellow with luminous green reflections – a visual promise of freshness and precision, which is inherent to this Gewürztraminer from the cool-sited monopoly vineyard Clos Windsbuhl.
Nose
The aromatics unfold in two acts: initially fresh pastry with Tahitian vanilla and doughnut aromas seduce, before the classic Gewürztraminer signature breaks through with air contact. Linden blossom, lychee and mango meet fine spice notes of mace and yellow cardamom. Yet unlike many opulent representatives of the variety, this nose remains balanced, almost restrained – no baroque excess.
Palate
Here the true nature of Clos Windsbuhl reveals itself: stringent, focused, mineral. The cool hillside location shapes the wine with taut structure, which eliminates any trace of heaviness. The residual sweetness present is carried and integrated by firm minerality – a Gewürztraminer that relies not on velvet, but on clarity.
Finish
Long and precise. The minerality runs consistently through to the finale and leaves behind what one rarely finds with this grape variety: the desire for the next glass. Genuine drinking pleasure rather than aromatic exhaustion.
Terroir & Origin
The Clos Windsbuhl is a monopoly vineyard site of Domaine Zind-Humbrecht in Alsace. The cool aspect and the distinctive terroir lend this Gewürztraminer its atypical freshness and tension.
Food Pairing Recommendations
The structure and moderate sweetness make it an ideal companion for pike-perch on sauerkraut in cream sauce, Cantonese glazed spare ribs with pak choi or surprisingly also for caramelised sauerkraut with apples. Asian cuisine with its balance of sweetness, acidity and spice finds a congenial partner here.
Special Features
A Gewürztraminer that breaks with clichés: cool rather than opulent, mineral rather than heavy, pleasure-giving rather than tiring. Biodynamically farmed by one of Alsace’s most significant wine estates.
