Wine Description for Riesling „from Red Slate“ 2023 by Clemens Busch

Colour & Appearance
Pale, sparkling golden yellow with distinctive green reflections – a wine that already signals its youthful freshness in the glass.
Nose
Intense and multi-layered: vineyard peach and dried apricots dominate, flanked by orange and red apples. Beneath lie elderflower pith and acacia blossoms, whilst earthy nuances and subtle smoky notes lend depth. Fine spice accents of cardamom and cinnamon hint at future complexity – a promise of things to come.
Palate
Juicy and lively with invigorating acidity that carries the wine. A peppery spice and present grip provide structure, whilst the moderate alcohol content of 11% underscores the elegance. Grapefruit and lemon dominate the long, stimulating finish – this Riesling demands another sip.
Finish
Long and precise with citrus-fresh acidity and an increasing mineral tension that will gain further definition.
Terroir & Origin
A fascinating cuvée from two characterful parcels: the main component comes from the Rothenpfad above the railway viaduct near Pünderich, where soft, weathered red slate produces light, aromatic wines. This is complemented by grapes from the Nonnengarten (including the parcel „Rote Ader“), where heavier, mixed soils provide earthy crispness. This combination has existed since 2003 and defines the character of this wine.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Riesling from Clemens Busch, one of the pioneers of biodynamic viticulture on the Moselle. The wine displays the typical Busch signature: precise, unadorned, terroir-driven.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A versatile companion: trout au bleu, scallops with lemon butter, goat’s cheese, Thai dishes with lemongrass or sushi. The acidity and minerality also harmonise beautifully with green asparagus and herb vinaigrette.
Special Features
A classic long-distance runner that will showcase its minerality even more distinctly in the coming years. Already drinking well now, but with considerable ageing potential – typical of the precise, uncompromising Rieslings from Clemens Busch.
