Wine Description for Barolo DOCG Castiglione 2019 1500ml Magnum by Vietti

Colour & Appearance
Sparkling ruby red with luminous reflections and initial brown hues, indicating the classic maturity of Nebbiolo. In the magnum bottle, the wine presents itself with particular brilliance.
Nose
A textbook Barolo that reveals the full spectrum of Nebbiolo. Dark plum and blackberry merge with sour cherry and wild strawberry into a complex fruit profile. The typical floral component manifests itself in violet and violetta. Beneath lies a fascinating earthiness: damp forest floor, hints of black truffle, tree bark. Hazelnut, juniper and cubeb pepper round out the multi-layered aromatic spectrum.
Palate
Here the true class of this cuvée Barolo reveals itself: the fruit on the palate is surprisingly fresh and elegant, less dark than on the nose. The fine-meshed, present tannin structure is perfectly calibrated – powerful, yet never dominant. The firm acidity forms a brilliant counterweight to the positive bitter notes and creates that tension which distinguishes great Barolo. Remarkable is the drinking flow despite the structure.
Finish
Long, spicy and carried by fine bitterness. The earthy notes return, accompanied by dark fruit and spices. A finish that invites the next sip.
Terroir & Origin
A careful selection from various Barolo cru vineyard sites throughout the appellation. The calcareous marl soils vary depending on the commune and lend the wine its complexity. Vines between 10 and 45 years old, Guyot training, averaging 4,500 plants per hectare.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Nebbiolo, parcel-specific vinification. Brief cold maceration, 3-4 weeks skin contact, malolactic fermentation in wood. Ageing over 30 months in large wooden casks and to a small extent in used barriques. Final assemblage only after ageing – classic Barolo craftsmanship.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Braised beef, grilled lamb leg with green asparagus, spelt risotto with walnuts and radicchio, aged Parmigiano Reggiano, game dishes with mushrooms.
Special Features
The magnum bottle promises optimal ageing conditions. Vietti’s Castiglione is year after year a reference for classic BaroloPiedmont in its purest form, as it is so aptly said. A wine that unites tradition and drinking pleasure.
