Neuenahrer Sonnenberg Frühburgunder 2017 from the vineyard Julia Bertram / Ahr
Julia is lucky to have a treasure trove of particularly old Frühburgunder vines at her disposal. This wine comes from one of the oldest Frühburgunder vineyards in the Ahr. The fifty-year-old vines stand on loamy soils with a sandy layer. The wine was aged in used wooden barrels made of local oak. The grapes are harvested by hand and - after a cold maceration - fermented spontaneously. Since 2016, Julia Bertram's winery no longer uses chaptalization. Except for a small amount of sulfur shortly before bottling, nothing is added to the wine.

Nose
In the fragrance is the Frühburgunder from the Neuenahr Sonnenberg slightly smoky and herbaceously tart with a note of sour cherries, pomegranate juice, damp earth and a little bacon. With that also lies the Frühburgunder completely in line with the cool and firm style of Julia Bertram.
Palate
This impression continues on the palate, where the wine initially shows a cool, red berry fruit, which is accompanied by herbs and a smoke that is already present in the aroma. Then, however, the wine impresses with a creamy tannin, which is in connection with a light wood influence including a slightly vanilla accompaniment. The finish is again reminiscent of smoked bacon but not at all intrusive. With its elegant tannin and the cool, juicy train together with the fine minerality, this is an extremely successful representative of this quite rare Pinot variety.
