Wine information
Vindemiatrix is only produced in exceptional vintages. The name is a tribute to the star in the constellation Virgo. Historically, the ancient Romans waited for its appearance in the night sky to mark the beginning of the grape harvest. This is reflected in the Italian and French words for grape harvest "vendemmia" and "vendange" respectively. The wine comes from the vineyards of Serrat de la Plane, Catalan for "stony plateau". The soil of these extreme vineyards produces grapes that come from vines that are more than 100 years old.
Color
The exterior of this wine is coloured a veiled purple-red that gently turns to lighter colours at the rim.
Aroma
Vindemiatrix from 2014 enchants with its wild and authentic fruitiness. Blackberries, mulberries and blackcurrants predominate, mingling with rosemary and juniper. The cool and refreshing fruitiness is underlined by wild sage and black olives. Subtle notes of graphite and charcoal add additional depth and sophistication, a unique creation by Georg Meißner.
Taste
The palate reflects the freshness and filigree of Carignan, with a stable body and elegant coolness. It is said to have a juicy texture and a low alcohol content, which makes it an excellent accompaniment to many dishes - preferably from its home region.
Alternative menu suggestion:
Variation one: Grilled ciabatta with black olive tapenade
Variation two: Rack of lamb with rosemary, pea pods and stewed tomatoes
Variation three: Roasted octopus on a ragout of artichokes and fennel.
