Sousòn

Also known as: Vinhão (Portugal), Sezão (Douro)

One of the old Galician varieties with extremely dark skin that almost disappeared after phylloxera. Known as Vinhão in Portugal – genetically closely related, though not identical. The grape provides deep colour and is traditionally used in Galicia for rosés, together with Caiño and Brancellao.

In the Rías Baixas, where Attis Bodegas y Vinedos cultivates the variety, it shows a different side – tart, saline, with a freshness one wouldn’t expect from such a dark grape. There are barely 350 hectares of it left in all of Spain.
