Transparent ruby red with delicate violet reflections.... - Dark, spicy, dense and bacony, the 2018 Pommard "Clos de Roses" Monopole from Domaine Rougeot Pére & Fils reveals smoky bacon, tobacco, sandalwood and musk on the nose, as well as black cardamom and leather outline the spicy aspects of this Pommard, which is underpinned by dark extract-rich fruit. Instead, it tells of the future, of patience, long-suffering and appropriate bottle maturity.

The enclosed "Clos des Roses" is located in the lower part of Pommard and is bordered by the village stream of the same name. It is situated in the middle of the south-east facing site Rue du Porc and covers 0.90 hectares on gravelly and sandy alluvial soils.

After the hand harvest and renewed selection, the three-week maceration follows with 90% whole grapes and daily flooding with racking once or twice. The wine is then pumped into barriques where it undergoes malolactic fermentation. Unfiltered and unfined, it is bottled after a small addition of sulphur after 18 months of ageing.

Nose

Dark, spicy, dense and bacony, the 2018 Pommard "Clos de Roses" Monopole from Domaine Rougeot Pére & Fils shows smoky bacon, tobacco, sandalwood and musk as well as black cardamom and leather on the nose, outlining the spicy aspects of this Pommard, which is underpinned by dark extract-rich fruit. Black cherries and plum jam are counterpointed by pomegranate seeds and small raspberries. Complex nose with immense depth.

Mouth

With tightly woven, low-pile tannin and youthful tannin on the palate, it flows over the lips and initially acts as a purely structural experience instead of courting the drinker's favour with fruity cascades. A Pommard is a Pommard remains a Pommard, it seems to want to tell you, while it continues to refuse to shine with youthful charm. Instead, it tells of the future, of patience, long-suffering and appropriate bottle maturity.
