Nose
At Clemens Busch, it is very exciting to taste the three different types of slate in parallel. Each of the three soil formations has its own character in the glass. The first impression promises ripe pear, a little honey and candied citrus fruits. Fresh grapefruit and a subtle herbal note join in. All these fruity and sweet hints are underpinned by a distinct slate tone. The grey slate gives hope for a crystal clear minerality.
Palate
Only one person can do that in this form on the Mosel. Clemens Busch has mastered to enliven Riesling with pressure and tension. His handwriting is clearly recognizable. The Riesling "vom grauen Schiefer" is vibrant and charged in the glass. His wines are underpinned with a great phenolic, which can be traced back to maceration times. The acidity in the Riesling is present, but by no means dominant. The residual sweetness is set low, but very well balanced. Bright stone and pome fruits and juicy grapefruit reappear. On the basis of fresh, local herbs and green tea.
The slate soil imparts a cool, stony tone. A very present extract perfectly rounds off the mouthfeel. It is strongly reminiscent of umami and the sensory emotions associated with it.
