Wine information

As with all sites on the Rote Hang in Nierstein, the Pettenthal The soil is characterised by the Rotliegende, a red weathered rock consisting of shale and sandstone, and in the flatter part of loam and clay. The higher the altitude, the poorer the soil and the deeper the vines have to root. The central parcel of Kühling-Gillot lies at around 140 metres, has a slope of more than 70 % and is thus the steepest site in all of Rheinhessen. Humus is hardly found in this vineyard, which is why the vines have to root deep into the rock. The wines are harvested by hand after strict selection, the must is fermented spontaneously and carefully matured in single barrels.

Nose

The Pettenthal is virtually emblematic of the style that H.O. Spanier prefers in his winery and in the winery of his wife Carolin. Here it is not about fruit, but about the liquefaction of a certain place, as it were. It smells a little of smoke, peel and berry notes as well as citrus, hops, tobacco and some curry leaf. The whole thing does not seem expressive, however, but discreet and finesse-rich.

Mouth

On the palate, this Riesling is a typical textural and structural wine. It is grippy in extract and phenolic, juicy in the bright citrus and white-fleshed fruit and combines this with a stony and earthy spiciness. The immense pressure is particularly striking. The longer the Riesling lingers on the palate, the more lively, mineral and demanding it becomes. There is an energetic acidic nerve with a lot of tension, a vibrating minerality and a fantastic brilliance and transparency until far into the hardly ending finish.
