Nose

The nose of the 2015 Nierstein Ölberg Riesling Auslese from Kai Schätzle is straightforward and direct. Citronate, candied orange peel and kumquats outline the citrus spectrum, dried fruit like quince and apricots fill its fruit basket. The zesty sulphur spice is embellished by ginger, lemongrass, lemon balm and a twist of spearmint in the top notes. Spicy components of white pepper and mace balance the opulent container.

Mouth

On the nose, the 142g of residual sugar seem almost downplayed, so taut and fresh it fizzes across the palate. The acidity points the way and balances it as straightforward as streamlined. Nothing sticks, nothing wobbles, its connective tissue is firm, its appearance focused. Of course, the citrus fruit aromas are reflected on the palate, but what distinguishes it is its rapid pace. At 7%, it has marginally more alcohol than a bottle of beer, but offers drinking pleasure of the very highest order. And this for now and the next 50 years.
