Wine Description for Pouilly-Vinzelles Climat „Les Longeays“ AOC 2021 from La Soufrandière
- Colour & Appearance
- Intense, luminous straw yellow with golden reflections – a wine that already hints at substance and maturity in the glass.
- Nose
- The nose is of remarkable precision and complexity. Vibrant citrus notes – lemon zest, fresh lime – meet ripe yellow plum and white-fleshed peach. Beneath these weave fine accents of jasmine, tree bark and damp foliage, carried by a mineral stone vein that unmistakably reveals its origin.
- Palate
- On the palate, an elegant, firmly structured wine unfolds: citric fruit and crisp acidity form the backbone, embedded in a fine, subtly yeasty creaminess that speaks to the 17 months of ageing. A discreet tannin provides grip and tension, before a long, saline-mineral finish enlivens the palate.
- Finish
- Long, precise and characterised by persistent salinity. The elegant, fine-pored texture remains present until the very last moment – a wine that demands another sip.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Climat Les Longeays sits at 210 metres elevation in the Pouilly-Vinzelles appellation, directly adjacent to the renowned Climat Les Quarts, with a south-south-east exposure. The soil of iron-rich clay and limestone of Bajocian origin (Middle Jurassic) gives the wine its characteristic mineral depth and is the foundation for the longevity this vineyard site is known for.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Chardonnay from 38-year-old vines, hand-harvested on 22 September 2021. Whole-bunch pressing and spontaneous fermentation without the use of cultured yeasts. Ageing over 17 months – initially eleven months in Burgundy pièces, then in large casks – with complete malolactic fermentation. The low total sulphur of 34 mg/l and pH of 3.16 underscore the Bret brothers‘ consistently natural approach to winemaking.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- A versatile companion for fine dining: excellent with lemon chicken in kaffir lime and coconut cream, with pear and ricotta ravioli in brown butter and cream sauce or an elegant fish parmentier with cod, cauliflower, almonds and chickpeas.
- Special Features
- With merely 0.54 hectares of vineyard, this wine counts among the rare productions of the Mâconnais. The Bret brothers of La Soufrandière are regarded as reference producers of the region – their consistently natural approach, combined with the extraordinary terroir of Les Longeays, makes this Chardonnay one of the most exciting Burgundies beyond the Côte d’Or.
