Tasting note from from 16.03.2023, Copyright Sebastian Bordthäuser

Between the Fenouillèdes valley and the Pyrenees, Agnès and Alain Carrère have created living vineyards from the rugged terroir of their homeland. In 2007, the couple decided to switch to organic farming and sought advice from Tom Lubbe of Domaine Matassa. The clay, limestone or slate soils on the foothills allow the grape varieties to express their different terroir. Vines that are over 120 years old are the great potential of Domaine Majas. The old Carignan, Grenache and Macabeu vines are complemented by young vineyards planted with Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet, Chardonnay and Rolle.

The Majas blanc is classified as IGP Cotes Catalanes and consists of a quarter each of Macabeu, Rolle, Grenache blanc and Chenin blanc. The vines are on average 35 years old and yield a good 38 hectolitres. Grown on clay and calcareous soil, the harvest is done manually, the fermentation spontaneously and the ageing without wood in steel tanks. A fresh southern French fizz.

Color

Bright yellow with green reflections.

Nose

The nose of the 2021 Majas blanc from Domaine de Majas combines crystal clear fruit with floral top notes and Mediterranean spice. Nashi pear and yellow stone fruit like apples or plump pears are garnished by white flowers in the overtone range. Add to this herbal green notes of chervil and sage as well as wild fennel and thyme. A fresh white from one of the hottest regions of France - chapeau!

Mouth

On the palate, it is also clear as a bell with fine viscosity and an animatingly saline character. The highly aromatic herbs rather than the fruit notes show up in the extract. A simple yet joyful wine that calibrates the level of everyday life and shines in all its uncomplicatedness as a solid sip from Monday to Friday.
