Wine information
As with all sites on the Rote Hang in Nierstein, the Pettenthal The soil is characterised by the Rotliegende, a red weathered rock consisting of shale and sandstone, and in the flatter part of loam and clay. The higher the altitude, the poorer the soil and the deeper the vines have to root. The central parcel of Kühling-Gillot lies at around 140 metres, has a slope of more than 70 % and is thus the steepest site in all of Rheinhessen. Humus is hardly found in this vineyard, which is why the vines have to root deep into the rock. The wines are harvested by hand after strict selection, the must is fermented spontaneously and carefully matured in single barrels.

Nose
The Pettenthal is almost emblematic of the style that H.O. Spanier favours in his winery and in his wife Carolin's winery. This is not about fruit, but rather about the liquefaction of a particular place. This is the 2022s once again succeeded in a remarkable way. There is a hint of floral scent and zest, smoke and lemon balm, yeast and crushed rock that rises from the glass like a haze.
Mouth
The palate is again slightly smoky, then grippy, powerful and full of tension. There is little fruit but plenty of rock, extract and a deep minerality. It is a Riesling whose arc of tension extends far into the distance and into the future, but which is already absolutely precise and vibrantly lively with an energetic acid nerve and an elegant texture. Like its Wonnegau counterpart, the 2022 FrauenbergThis is also a fabulous, elegant wine that is still in the making.
