The wine region of Ribera del Duero in northern Spain has established itself over the past few decades alongside Rioja as a key player in the success story of Spanish wines. With its excellent reputation and clear positioning in the premium segment, this region offers a fascinating wine landscape worth exploring. Today we take a look at three remarkable wineries that exemplify the diversity and quality of Ribera del Duero.

    The Region: A World-Class Terroir

Ribera del Duero is characterised by its barren high-altitude locations, which extend between 800 and 950 metres above sea level. The deep limestone soils, often covered only by a thin layer of clay, give the wines a pronounced minerality. The extreme temperature differences between day and night are style-defining and a blessing for wine production. They allow the main grape variety Tempranillo, called Tinta del País here, to retain its characteristic acidity, which provides perfect balance to the powerful tannins.

In recent years, a remarkable trend has been observed in the region: more and more winemakers are turning to natural viticulture methods and discovering biodynamics for themselves. This shift reflects not only a growing awareness of nature, but also the desire to express the uniqueness of the terroir even more authentically in the wine. Biodynamic vineyard management promotes biodiversity and strengthens the resilience of the vines, which has a positive effect on the quality and character of the wines.

    Félix Callejo

Félix Callejo is one of the pioneers of the quality offensive in Ribera del Duero. For over three decades, he has tirelessly driven his business and the region forward. What once began as a bodega founded by the couple Félix and Pilar is now run by their four children – all trained oenologists or economists.

The wines of Félix Callejo reflect the essence of the region. The „Flores de Callejo“ offers uncomplicated everyday drinking pleasure, whilst the „Gran Callejo“ is a prime example of origin and grape variety. Particularly interesting is the „Parajes de Callejo“, which alongside Tinta del País also contains small portions of the white grape variety Albillo Mayor, which gives the wine additional complexity and freshness.

    Valdemonjas

Valdemonjas is an impressive example of how modern architecture, art and sustainable wine production can harmonise perfectly. The state-of-the-art building not only offers breathtaking aesthetics, but also ideal conditions for gentle, nature-oriented winemaking. What is particularly noteworthy is the commitment to sustainability: the winery is self-sufficient in water and electricity.

Under the direction of a talented team of oenologists, Valdemonjas produces wines renowned for their elegance and finesse. The „El Primer Beso“ gives a first impression of the quality, whilst the „Abre Las Alas“ from the top vineyard site El Nogal de la Valera is being touted as a candidate for top ratings in wine guides.

    Wachisnais

In a region famous for its red wines, Wachisnais surprises with exquisite vermouth production. Founded by three friends – Paco, Noe and Juan Pablo – Wachisnais is a homage to the Spanish tradition of the „vermouth moment“ after Sunday Mass.

In Juan Pablo’s family-owned bodega, every bottle of Wachisnais is crafted with the utmost care. The foundation is formed by Tempranillo and Verdejo wines, which are refined with a carefully selected blend of 37 botanical ingredients.

The range includes the complex Celestial (limited edition), the citrus-fresh Blanco and the multi-layered Tintorro. Each vermouth presents a precisely balanced aroma profile that combines bitterness, sweetness, citrus notes, herbs and spice. Wachisnais embodies the art of vermouth enjoyment: convivial, authentic and full of joie de vivre.
