Wine Description for Eichberg Oberrotweil Spätburgunder GG 2023 by Franz Keller

Character
Franz Keller winery counts among the pioneers of Baden Spätburgunder and with the Eichberg holds one of the most prestigious vineyard sites in Oberrotweil in its portfolio. The classification as Großes Gewächs underscores the ambition: dry top-quality wine from the finest single vineyard. The 2023 vintage should display the characteristic elegance and finesse for which the Keller house is renowned, despite challenging climatic conditions. With a moderate 13% alcohol, the wine remains within the classical framework of Burgundian style.
Terroir & Origin
The Eichberg in Oberrotweil lies at the foot of the Kaiserstuhl, that extinct volcano which ranks among Germany’s warmest wine-growing regions. The volcanic soils composed of loess and weathered stone impart mineral depth and a particular tension to the wines. Oberrotweil is regarded as a stronghold of Baden Pinot Noir, where the mild climate and protected hillside locations create ideal conditions for slow maturation. The south-west exposure of the vineyard site guarantees optimal sun exposure whilst benefiting from cooling air currents from the Rhine valley.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Franz Keller cultivates Spätburgunder with Burgundian understanding: old vines, strict yield reduction, selective hand-harvesting. Vinification follows traditional principles with spontaneous fermentation and careful extraction to avoid masking the fruit. Ageing in barrique – presumably with restrained new oak – serves to build structure without overwhelming the terroir-driven elegance. The result: wines that evoke the Côte de Beaune rather than opulent New World styles.
Food Pairing Recommendations
A wine of this calibre demands appropriate culinary accompaniment: rosy roasted veal fillet, Coq au Vin or braised Bresse chicken harmonise with the silky texture. Game dishes such as venison loin with lingonberries or aged Comté and Époisses are equally suitable. Its Burgundian orientation makes it the ideal companion for mushroom dishes and truffle risotto.
