Wine Description for Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru „Île des Vergelesses“ blanc Unsulphited Sans Sulfites Ajoutes AOC 2020 1500ml Magnum by Chandon de Briailles
- Colour & Appearance
- Slightly hazy, deep golden yellow – a colour that at first glance evokes a mature Burgundy, despite the wine’s youth. The natural cloudiness bears witness to uncompromising naturalness.
- Nose
- Fascinatingly multi-layered: After a hint of initial reduction, a bouquet unfolds of ripe pears, apples and quinces, accompanied by citrus zest. Fine notes of patisserie, hazelnut and white nougat lend depth, whilst in the background a subtle smoky note resonates – a delicate reminder of barrel ageing.
- Palate
- Here the true class of this unsulphited Burgundy reveals itself: elegant, juicy and carried by a ripe, wonderful acidity. The paradox succeeds masterfully – the wine feels simultaneously creamy and opulent, yet remains linear and precise. A silky texture culminates in a saline finish that provides tension. Complexity and fullness in weightless form – at only 11.5% alcohol, a remarkable achievement.
- Finish
- Long, saline-mineral and of a refreshing precision that invites the next sip. The wine leaves a lasting impression of elegance and finesse.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Premier Cru vineyard site Île des Vergelesses (9.41 hectares) is considered the finest site in Pernand-Vergelesses – at Grand Cru level. The pebbly and chalky red marl with high iron content gives the wine its characteristic minerality and structure, comparable to the legendary Corton hill.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Chardonnay from vines planted in 1985 and 1991 at 10,000 vines per hectare. Whole bunch pressing, spontaneous fermentation in predominantly neutral, multi-year barrels. 14 months ageing on full lees without bâtonnage, bottled directly from barrel – completely without sulphur addition.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Sea bass en papillote with saffron mussel stock, grilled langoustines in light chicken stock with Sichuan pepper and green asparagus, or gnocchi with lemon Beurre Bordier, sage and fennel pollen.
- Special Features
- A radical natural wine that not only remained stable over five days but continuously improved – proof of the extraordinary quality and vitality of this unsulphited Burgundy. The magnum bottle guarantees optimal ageing conditions.
