Alicante Bouschet
Also known as: Garnacha Tintorera (Spain)
One of the few crossings that has made something of itself – Henri Bouschet bred it in the late 19th century from Petit Bouschet and Grenache. What makes it special: red flesh, a teinturier grape. Often used as a colouring grape in southern France, taken more seriously in Portugal. Ampeleia in Tuscany shows what happens when you don’t just treat it functionally – dense, spicy wines with depth rather than merely colour.
