Wine Description for Salzberg 2016 by Heinrich

Character
The Salzberg unites the peppery spice of Blaufränkisch with the supple fullness of Merlot into a Burgenland cuvée of remarkable harmony. The Heinrich winery, a pioneer of biodynamic viticulture at Lake Neusiedl, creates here a wine that elegantly combines structure and drinkability. With 13.5% alcohol, the 2016 vintage shows maturity without excess – a wine with Burgundian finesse rather than opulent power-mongering.
Terroir & Origin
The Neusiedlersee region in Burgenland offers ideal conditions for this cuvée: Pannonian climate with hot summers and the moderating influence of the shallow steppe lake. The soils around Gols, where the Heinrichs farm, are characterised by gravel, sand and loam – terroirs that lend structure to Blaufränkisch and elegance to Merlot. The name Salzberg alludes to the mineral components of these vineyard sites, which give the wine tension and depth.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Blaufränkisch, Austria’s great red variety, brings dark fruit, pepper spice and firm tannins to the cuvée. The Merlot complements with velvety texture and round fruit. At Heinrich, biodynamic viticulture means: spontaneous fermentation, minimal intervention, no fining or filtering. The ageing takes place presumably in used wooden barrels, which lend the wine complexity without dominating it with oak aromas. The result is a wine that expresses its terroir authentically.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This Salzberg calls for hearty cuisine: beef roulades, braised game ragout or grilled lamb rack are ideal companions. The spicy component harmonises beautifully with peppers, roasted root vegetables or mushroom dishes. The wine also shows its class with aged hard cheeses such as Bergkäse or Comté. The moderate alcohol level makes it a pleasant food companion that doesn’t overwhelm but rather accompanies.
