Info

The VDP. Ortswein "Quarzit" comes from the Oestrich vineyards Doosberg, Lenchen and Klosterberg. The vines grow on deep, calcareous loess, which is mixed with terrace sediments and rocks from the Alzey Formation, i.e. sea sand. There are also quartzite veins and clay marl. The water retention capacity of the soil is perfect for hot phases and there is a high availability of minerals.

The grapes are harvested and selected by hand. The whole grapes are gently pressed over several hours. Spontaneous fermentation and subsequent ageing for 10 months on the lees. Maturation takes place both in steel tanks and in large oak barrels. Bottled shortly before harvest at the end of August.

Color

Bright golden yellow with green reflections

Nose

The VDP.Ortswein from Oestrich bears the epithet Quarzit. For years, this bottling has been an example of the quality of the winery and the name keeps its promise. The finest Riesling fruit meets Kühn's herbal breeze full of energy. Green apple, kaffir lime, white peach and grapefruit duel for fruit supremacy. The finest herbs exert powerful pressure on the fruit. Lemon balm, sage, chervil, parsley and mint are clearly and loudly represented. White pepper and roasted fennel seeds slowly flow out of the glass. It is reminiscent of herbal infusions and slowly builds up floral accents in white and yellow colouring. A piece of nature in the context of a classic Rheingau.

Palate

On the palate, it pushes directly and brutally. Enormously energetic and full of tension. The Kühn family has mastered this intense feel for years. Dense, compact, great mouthfeel with the same level of fruit, elegance and length. All extremes are in perfect balance with each other. The stone shows itself again in cool, taut form. Pure Riesling in the interpretation of its creator. So much happens while drinking that the flavours initially fade into the distance. Fruit and herbs are perfectly emphasised in the finish.
