The chestnut bush is rounded off by the chestnut trees that give it its name. Its soils date back to the Permian period, which created them around 280 million years ago. As one of the highest sites in the southern Palatinate Forest, Kastanienbusch lies at up to 320m above sea level, making it the highest VDP-classified site in the Palatinate. The Rebholz part of the Kastanienbusch is limited to a valley basin with a steep southern slope. There, the extremely long-lived GGs grow on Rotliegendem from loose granite, slate and melaphyra deposits. The grapes were destemmed and fermented in steel after 24 hours of maceration.
Color
Bright lemon yellow with green reflections and silver rim.
Nose
Always silent in its youth, the 2019 Kastanienbusch Riesling Großes Gewächs from Ökonomierat Rebholz is initially reserved. With increasing aeration, it tells in a quiet, yet determined tone of the essence and essence of things of dried herbs, some lemon verbena, of green apples only the peel, green walnuts and cassis leaves. Underneath all this is the delicate spice of the Rotliegende, slightly smoky with notes of red pepper.
Mouth
On the nose, it is firm and closed, and initially gives you the cold shoulder. The monolith of tart phenolic and salty minerality needs air again to become talkative. Then it chats, albeit hesitantly, of white peach and yellow pome fruit, driven by its taut acidity and pithy extract. The fine-grained, aromatically tart tannins are polished and bunched, the wine builds enormous pressure and seems almost to burst with inner tension on the palate. Citrusy, ethereal finish with colossal length. With its powerful sediment, the Chestnut Bush, as always, needs time to become fully approachable.
