The Muskateller Natural comes from the Ried Neuberg on Vienna's Nussberg. The soil consists of limestone-rich shell limestone weathering with limestone in the subsoil.
Since 2015, Hajszan Neumann has been vinifying mash-fermented white wines without intervention. The grapes were selectively harvested by hand, crushed and fermented spontaneously in amphorae. In March, the wine was racked and transferred to a stainless steel tank to mature for a further six weeks. After four months in the bottle, the wine was released onto the market unfined and unfiltered.
Color
Rich straw yellow with light orange reflections and a subtle silky-matt cloudiness.
Nose
It is no longer a secret that mash fermentation is particularly favourable to aromatic varieties. The distinct Muscat notes are clearly recognisable, but are domesticated by the fermentation and become spicier and more focused through contact with oxygen. Nutmeg, muscat grape, mace and the scent of roses outline the floral aromas, complemented by allspice, clove, white pepper and dried apple rings and quince.
Mouth
On the palate, it oscillates between floral, fruity and strikingly tart flavours. The fragrant components are underpinned by the distinctively tart phenolic flavour, which gives it the texture of a lightly coated Darjeeling. This can backfire, but the 2022 Natural Muscat from Hajszan Neumann is exemplary in its realisation. Animating with slightly bitter tannins, it is clearly contoured and once again moves in a spicy rather than fragrant-floral direction.
