Info about the wine

The imposing south-east facing hill of Grand Cru Hengst is located to the south of the village of Wintzenheim. The red Oligocene limestone has proven to be one of the best sites for the Gewurztraminer grape variety. The vineyard enjoys very warm and dry growing conditions and the soil brings structure, great phenolic concentration and emphasises varietal characteristics in favour of the more complex spicy expressions.

Info about the expansion

The wine is made from two small vineyards planted in 1953 and in the 1920s. These are arguably the estate's best and finest Gewurztraminer varieties. They precede the higher yielding modern clones and are capable of producing a consistent, complex wine where varietal characteristics do not take centre stage. Naturally, the Stallion is harvested at a high level of ripeness and can always be expected to finish with some residual sweetness.

Color

Dense and brilliant golden yellow.

Nose

Already unmistakable on the nose The 2019 Gewurztraminer Hengst has immense power and lives from an intense and compact minerality as well as a clear spicy note. It should be opened a day before, then aromas of cardamom, cumin, bergamot, leather, wood smoke, light tobacco and forest honey flow into the nose. Fruity aromas of dried apricot, fig and date are also evident and will become more precise with further maturation.

Palate

As expected, this very classic Gewurztraminer presents itself powerfully on the tongue, with a proudly swelling chest, and virtually discharges with a mixture of fruit and spices, dried fruit and fresh ethereal ginger and bergamot notes. Its tannin structure seems super fine and inspiring, its acidity exceedingly lively. Full of pressure, complex and beautiful, its freshness already seduces you to enjoy it immediately, but you should rather put a few bottles in the cellar, because in a few years you can burn off a real firework of aromas with it.
