Kerner
Also known as: no common synonyms
Kerner is a German crossing from 1929 – a cross between Trollinger and Riesling. The variety was named after the Württemberg poet Justinus Kerner. It produces wines that sit between its parents: more body than Riesling, more elegance than Trollinger. In some years, Kerner shows a delicate muscat note, without however having the forwardness of typical Muscat varieties.
The variety had its heyday in the 1980s, but has largely fallen out of fashion in Germany today – most producers focus on classic varieties. All the more interesting when someone still gives Kerner a chance.
