Wine
Matassa, Rouge 2015
Wine information
Carignan with 75 % very old Carignan rouge in mixed set with 25 % Carignan gris and blanc. Harvest of about 15 hl/ha. Matured for 16 months in 500 litre barrels.
Color
light translucent cherry-red
Nose
That here the red Carignan is accompanied by white and grey becomes obvious quite quickly in the aroma. Besides a fine wood spice and red forest berries - I'm thinking of wild strawberries, cranberries, but also sloes - the wine seems downright floral and sweet with a fine hint of volatile acidity, which, however, is not out of the ordinary but simply belongs to this wine.
Palate
The influence of the white Carignan is even clearer on the palate, where the 2015 Matassa Rouge is bright and delicate, and impressively elegant and clear. The wood mentioned in the bouquet remains in the background and marks the frame in which this floating South French wine moves. The wine is carried by a fresh acidity and an equally young, fresh fruit that is still at the beginning of its development. The elegance that the wine develops is reminiscent of fine Pinot Noir.
Food recommendations by Christoph Raffelt:
- Pot-au-feu of gurnard with star anise and saffron
(fish)
- Veal chops in pepper-salt crust with peperonata
(meat, veal, fruit vegetables (nightshade))
- Potatoes cooked in the papillote with bacon butter and rosemary salt
(potato)
