Wine Description for Gewürztraminer Rangen de Thann Clos-Saint-Urbain Grand Cru 2023 from Domaine Zind-Humbrecht
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous lemon yellow with golden reflexes and greenish accents – a visual promise of future maturation, as the green yields to gold.
- Nose
- Here Gewürztraminer reveals itself in an unusual guise: intense, yet without the varietal’s typical opulence. Lychee, passion fruit and ripe mango meet the cooler side of the aromatics – Nashi pear, green apples and a distinctive bergamot zest, increasingly dominant. The mandarin peel shifts deftly between bitter, sweet and sour. Lemongrass, coriander and mint lend oriental spice, whilst a whisper of turmeric merely knocks softly. In the background: the stony minerality of the volcanic terroir, which lends the wine its remarkable finesse.
- Palate
- Vinified dry with just 1.1 g/l residual sugar – a radical decision that pays off. The wine opens juicy and aromatically powerful, but immediately shifts into a taut, precise structure. Despite 14% alcohol, it remains cool, threaded through with stony minerality, without any oily heaviness. Concentration flashes through in moments, yet creates cool elegance rather than density. Remarkable: the persistent astringency despite low acidity ensures an invigorating salivary flow. A compact, structured wine that doesn’t coat the tongue, but impresses with mineral clarity and pleasantly warm presence.
- Finish
- Persistent and marked by stony precision, with lingering citrus notes and a mineral freshness that refreshes the palate and invites the next encounter.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Rangen de Thann is the southernmost Grand Cru of Alsace – an enormously steep, south-facing parcel on volcanic sediments of tuff and greywacke. The Gewürztraminer vines (average age 44 years) grow in the lower, river-influenced section, sheltered from cold winds. The volcanic terroir tames the varietal’s natural exuberance and bestows upon it mineral richness.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Only healthy grapes were brought in – neither overripe nor noble rot affected. The 2023 fermented very quickly to dryness and matured for eleven months on full lees until bottling. The result is not stylistic choice alone, but also born of climatic necessity: early botrytis at higher temperatures leads to rot rather than noble sweetness.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- Asian cuisine with Thai curries, Vietnamese summer rolls or Chinese dim sum. Equally harmonious with scallops with ginger, pan-fried monkfish or Munster cheese – the Alsatian classic.
- Special Characteristics
- A Gewürztraminer that breaks with convention: dry rather than sweet, taut rather than opulent, mineral rather than heavy. The power of the volcanic Rangen tames the varietal and shapes a wine of rare precision and individuality.
