medium straw yellow
That the special situation of the Cuvée Ste. Catherine within the Schlossberg has more sand and weathered rock than the higher part, which is used for the classic Castle Hill is used, has the consequence that the wine presents itself more yellow-fruity and riper. Here it is the red and yellow apple notes that form the start. In addition, stone fruit and a ripe citrus and orange fruit as well as a light curry spice and stone. Nevertheless, this is a particularly bright, clear and focused. St. Catherine.
On the palate, the wine is not only more yellow-fruited, but also darker, smokier, stonier, and more muscular than the Castle Hill. There is a lot of juicy (mirabelle plums), but also tart fruit (kumquats, grapefruit, ginger), and with air the wine builds up to a great monument. What power this Riesling has, how mysterious and dark it comes across, what depth and length it has, is phenomenal. It shows all this after hours in the carafe; because the wine is still very young. If you give it the time, the concentrated minerality also becomes clearer and more insistent. It is a great 2017 Riesling moment that you have there in the glass and that you should not miss.
