Wine description for Brutal Orange VdF 2023 from Matassa

Tom Lubbe's Matassa vineyard in windswept Roussillon reveals the true soul of the Catalan border region with his "Brutal Orange". This transparent, unpretentious natural wine embodies the growing movement of winegrowers who are resisting industrialisation and returning to their roots. With a modest 10% alcohol and the unadulterated Macabeu As a basis, it tells a story of restraint and precision.

Terroir & craftsmanship

The barren, slate-rich soils of northern Roussillon, where the Pyrenees gently fade away, force the vines to fight a battle that results in concentrated expressiveness. Lubbe, originally from South Africa, works here with minimal intervention - biodynamic cultivation, spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts and careful ageing without technical manipulation are his credo. The mash fermentation gives the wine its characteristic orange colour and structural depth without masking the finesse of the Macabeu.

Nose

In the glass unfolds a Delicate bouquet of white peaches, bitter orange and Mediterranean herbs. The garrigue typical of Roussillon - that mixture of thyme, rosemary and sun-warmed stone - resonates subtly in the background. A mineral component, almost salty in nature, is reminiscent of the nearby Mediterranean coast.

Palate

The palate reveals a Surprising freshnesswhich is supported by a fine, unobtrusive tannin structure and lively acidity. The low residual sweetness emphasises the purist approach. Citrus peel, dried apricots and a hint of bitter almond unfold in waves, while a stony minerality provides tension. The finish is precise, focussed and remarkably long for a wine of this lightness.

Food pairing suggestions

This wine calls for the simple but expressive cuisine of its home region. Grilled squid with aiolia rustic Bouillabaisse or a Vegetable coca (the Catalan answer to pizza) would perfectly complement the subtle nuances of this unpretentious masterpiece. Served at around 12°C, it unfolds its full potential.
