It has genuine stature: a copper-tinged glow, wild strawberry and barberry, juicy and almost fleshy on the palate, with a saline, lingering finish that transports you straight to the Mediterranean. Perfect for a long evening beneath the plane trees.

A tiny black volcanic island between Sicily and Africa, where the vines crouch low in black volcanic rock, bracing themselves against the wind. Zibibbo, ordinarily the grape of sweet Passito, here vinified bone dry. The nose is an entire summer bouquet of mango and rose blossom, the palate then surprisingly lean and saline. Exoticism without a trace of kitsch.

Ripe fruit and wet slate, held in perfect suspension by a touch of residual sweetness. This is what a holiday on your own doorstep tastes like. VDP Grosse Lage for just over twenty euros.
