The vintage Montalcino measures itself against

Ten years lie between the harvest and this glass. In the glass: undergrowth, porcini and tobacco, beneath them sour cherry and rosehip, a touch of violet, and ripe tannin with a lively acidity holding it together. All of that already today. And another ten years ahead.

The 2016 vintage was given five stars by the Consorzio, its highest mark. A cool, even summer without heat spikes, and a harvest that stretched into October. Years like that give the Brunelli people worship.

Podere Brizio sits in the south-west of Montalcino, one of the warmest corners of the appellation, at 300 to 350 metres with a view down to the Maremma. The Bartolommei family farms 16 hectares there on sandstone and rocky marl, certified organic. The warmth gives the ripeness, the marl the tension. The Riserva was given plenty of time: four years in vast casks of Allier oak, then years in bottle.

Translucent garnet with mahogany reflections at the rim. Silky and almost weightless on the palate, carried by the precise acidity of great Sangiovese vintages. The finish is long and spiced: cherry, herbs, a touch of liquorice.

Four more estates from Montalcino

The neighbours of Podere Brizio

Four more Montalcino estates sit in our cellar. On the 142 hectares of Col d’Orcia in the Val d’Orcia, sheep and goats graze between the rows. Le Chiuse lies on the northern edge and has belonged to the same family since 1790; until 1990 its entire harvest went anonymously to Biondi-Santi. Right next door, Jan Erbach and Caroline Pobitzer farm six hectares at Pian dell’Orino, where one vine yields one bottle. And at Salicutti, the first certified organic estate in the appellation, Sabine and Felix Eichbauer make their classical, finely drawn Brunelli from 4.5 hectares.

P.S.: Give it an hour of air, or reach straight for a large glass, ideally the Zalto Burgundy. With a tagliata of beef fillet and rosemary it lands exactly where it belongs.
