West-East Journey from Pantelleria to Lipari — Zibibbo, Frappato, Carricante, Korinthi aki  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

Hello,

until the 1980s, Sicily was Italy's blending-wine supplier. Today it is one of the most richly concentrated natural wine landscapes in the Mediterranean.

We take you on a west-to-east journey: Pantelleria, Alcamo, Monreale, Vittoria, Etna, Lipari — twelve wines, six estates, nine autochthonous grape varieties.

The Cases

Both cases add all six bottles to your basket in a single click. From there you can swap, remove or combine individual wines — including across the two cases.

1 · Pantelleria and Marsala

Western Sicily, the point at which the natural wine story began. Marco de Bartoli walked away from the Marsala marketing industry in the early 1980s and made an oxidative wine that had to be called Vecchio Samperi, because it was no longer permitted to carry the designation “Marsala”. His sons run the estate today.

Zibibbo · Pantelleria · Marco de Bartoli

De Bartoli's heirs in the Marsala-reformer tradition.

Skin-contact Zibibbo in buried terracotta tinajas, without sulphur, extended maceration. In the glass, amber-tawny. On the nose dried apricot and orange peel, on the palate a salty island depth and tannic firmness from the buried terracotta. With aged cheese and mostarda.

2 · Alcamo

North of Trapani, at the foot of Monte Bonifato. Vito Lauria studied oenology in Udine and returned to Alcamo in 2005 to take over the family estate — minimal sulphur, no fining, everything spontaneous.

3 · Monreale

In the Val di Mazara, north of Palermo. Case Alte represents the young generation working family parcels — organic, single-varietal, without hurry. Catarratto and Grillo, the two most widely planted whites on the island, finally treated as varieties in their own right.

4 · Vittoria

The south-eastern corner of the island, 150 kilometres south of Etna. In 1980 a trio founded the estate COS here and decided to work with Frappato at a time when nobody wanted Frappato. Arianna Occhipinti, niece of COS co-founder Giusto, has taken up that thread and turned Frappato into a terroir variety.
