Odinstal: The Vineyard in the Forest

Prices and availability as of September 27, 2026

350 metres up, no neighbours, and now its first red wine too. Two cases, approx. €212 and approx. €365.  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

Hello,

“Back then everyone laughed,” Andreas Schumann recalls. “Nothing ripens up there.” Up there is a clearing in the forest at 350 metres, high above Wachenheim, higher than vines usually grow in the Pfalz: no neighbours, forest all round, a volcano next door, which has laid basalt, Muschelkalk (shell limestone), Keuper and Buntsandstein (coloured sandstone) side by side across five hectares. Andreas Schumann has been the winemaker here since 2004 and has farmed biodynamically since 2006. And the scoffers were right, only not in the way they meant: in some years the grapes ripen up to twenty days later than in the valley, and the harvest often runs on into October. In a Pfalz that has grown this warm, that is now the greatest advantage a vineyard can have. Most of the wines come in at eleven to twelve and a half per cent alcohol and keep their freshness and structure. In 2021 the VDP admitted the estate because it stood out in the blind tastings, and the 2022 Riesling GG received 96 Falstaff points.

We have put together two cases: “The Clearing”, five wines from the hill and one from the valley, approx. €212. And “Odinstal. The Best.”: three Grosses Gewächs wines (GG for short), that is, wines from the very best sites, plus a red from the estate’s first red vintage, an unsulphured Riesling and the Sekt, approx. €365.

Down in the valley

Odinstal’s only vineyard down in the sea of vines lies at 120 metres between Niederkirchen and Friedelsheim, on sand, planted in the eighties. Unlike almost all the estate’s wines, this one does not sit on its skins in the tank, because Schumann wants it to be easy to understand. We start with it so that you can taste the difference from the hill.

Odinstal Riesling 120 N.N. 2024

Riesling 120 N.N. 2024

Riesling · Pfalz, 120 m · approx. €24

Eleven per cent alcohol, left on the full lees, the yeast sediment from fermentation, until shortly before bottling. Green apple, preserved lemon, rosemary, lean and dry. Jancis Robinson gave it 17 out of 20. Open it first, with a Flammkuchen or with no food at all.

350 N.N.

Our three 350s, Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois and Gewürztraminer, carry the altitude of the clearing in their names; N.N. stands for above sea level. Up top, half the vineyard is Riesling, just under a third Pinot Blanc, the rest Auxerrois, Silvaner, Gewürztraminer and Rieslaner. The 350s are made in a similar way: spontaneously fermented, with the malolactic conversion that softens the sharp malic acid, some whole, uncrushed bunches in the tank, little sulphur. The Pinot Blanc and the Auxerrois spend seven months on the lees.

Odinstal Weissburgunder 350 N.N. 2023

Weissburgunder 350 N.N. 2023

Pinot Blanc · Odinstal, 350 m · approx. €31

The main parcel, planted in the eighties, lies on heavy Keuper, two younger plots on Buntsandstein and basalt. Eleven and a half per cent alcohol, two grams of sugar. Walnut, salted caramel, blood orange, flint on the finish. We have 230 bottles of this wine, more than of any other from the estate. With it, pike-perch in butter.

Odinstal Auxerrois 350 N.N. 2023

Auxerrois 350 N.N. 2023

Auxerrois · Odinstal, 350 m · approx. €32

Auxerrois tends to run broad, so Schumann adds ten per cent whole bunches and ages a third of it in used casks. Vines from 2004 and 2014 on basalt, twelve per cent alcohol. Mirabelle plum, makrut lime leaf, hay, then smoke and quince. James Suckling gave it 94 points. With it, roast cauliflower.

Odinstal Gewürztraminer 350 N.N. 2023

Gewürztraminer 350 N.N. 2023

Gewürztraminer · Odinstal, 350 m · approx. €31

Picked in mid-September, before it turns opulent, four fifths pressed as whole bunches, one fifth left on the skins. Twelve per cent alcohol, three grams of sugar. Rosewater, nashi pear, fresh herbs, dry and slender, the opposite of what you expect from the variety. It goes well with a coconut curry.

Four rocks

The four soils lie side by side, and Schumann bottles them separately: three Rieslings, all made the same way, with a few whole bunches, in stainless steel, spontaneously fermented and almost two years on the lees, until July 2025. What differs is the rock beneath the roots. And, in 2023, the sugar: Schumann lets fermentation end wherever it stops of its own accord. The Basalt was left with just under eleven grams per litre, the Muschelkalk just under thirteen. Off-dry, then, but with around seven grams of acidity you taste it as tension, not as sweetness.

The third of the trio is the Riesling Buntsandstein 2023, from the estate’s oldest vines, planted in 1978, the year Schumann was born, on a soil that yields around twenty hectolitres per hectare. We have only 19 bottles of it left, approx. €42, which is why it is not in a case.

Odinstal Riesling Muschelkalk 2023

Riesling Muschelkalk 2023

Riesling · Odinstal, 350 m · approx. €42

The vines have stood right in front of the house since 1996, on a gentle east-facing slope, and were picked on 8 October. Seashell, Mirabelle plum, camomile tea, plus preserved lemon, compact and saline, with soft fruit. Parker and Galloni each gave it 93 points. With it, truite au bleu.

Odinstal Riesling Basalt 2023

Riesling Basalt 2023

Riesling · Odinstal, 350 m · approx. €52

Since 1983 the vines have stood at the foot of the basalt cone, less than ten metres from the old quarry. The basalt has weathered into heavy clay, which warms slowly in spring and holds the summer heat right through to ripening. Bitter orange, kumquat, mango, with smoke and mint beneath, the darkest of the three. Falstaff and Galloni each gave it 94 points. With it, pumpkin with cumin.

Right at the top

Thomas Hensel, who owns the estate, looked at the house on his way home for ten years before he was able to buy it. At the time it had neither water nor electricity. Hans-Günter Schwarz, for many years cellar master at Müller-Catoir, thought a wine estate up there mad, but possible. Today the clearing is a Grosse Lage, the highest classification in the VDP, and a monopole: it belongs entirely to the estate. The Riesling GG comes from the best parcels on basalt, Muschelkalk and Buntsandstein, the Pinot Blanc GG from vines on Keuper and basalt, the oldest planted in 1988. In 2023 Odinstal bottled no Riesling GG, hence the 2022. Because both are made so naturally, Schumann often has to fight for the official approval number at the state quality test. Both need air and time.

Odinstal Riesling GG Monopol 2022

Riesling GG Monopol 2022

Riesling · Odinstal, Grosse Lage · approx. €78

Long ageing in large oak casks, unfiltered, barely any sulphur, twelve per cent alcohol, three grams of sugar, seven grams of acidity. Fennel fronds, sourdough, makrut lime, with preserved lemon. In this wine, as Antonio Galloni noted, Schumann wanted to unite the verve of the basalt, the slenderness of the sandstone and the salt of the limestone. If you can, give it a few more years. With it, turbot.

Odinstal Weissburgunder GG Monopol 2023

Weissburgunder GG Monopol 2023

Pinot Blanc · Odinstal, Grosse Lage · approx. €68

Vines from 1988 and 2004, picked in early October, sixty per cent in used oak with malolactic conversion, forty in steel, then a second year on the full lees. Thirteen per cent alcohol. Hazelnut, green walnut, sage, pencil shavings, white peach. Parker gave it 95 points, Falstaff 96. With it, guinea fowl with morels.

Herxheim am Berg

Only one thing really does not ripen up there: red wine. So in 2024 the estate leased the Schumacher family’s winery for twenty years, eight kilometres further north, in Herxheim am Berg, beyond Bad Dürkheim: a former Cistercian monastery steward’s house with a vaulted cellar more than six hundred years old, and a clos, a walled vineyard. The clos is the heart of the Himmelreich site and lies behind limestone walls six metres high: a south-facing slope, sheltered from the wind, very calcareous soil, lower and warmer than the clearing, and planted with Burgundian clones since the eighties. “The rare chance to interpret one of the great historic terroirs of the Pfalz,” says Thomas Hensel.

With the Honigsack and the red GG, the estate bottled its first red vintage in 2024. Of the Honigsack there are five barriques, that is, small casks, from a yield of ten hectolitres per hectare, because in 2024 many flowers fell without setting berries. The red Grosses Gewächs, the Spätburgunder GG Himmelreich Herxheim 2024, was shown in August at the VDP pre-release tasting and stood out there because it tasted unlike anything beside it: of plum and incense, “more like a very, very old Burgundian style”, as one taster who was there wrote. 61 bottles, approx. €85.

Odinstal Riesling GG Himmelreich Herxheim 2024

Riesling GG Himmelreich Herxheim 2024

Riesling · Herxheim am Berg, Grosse Lage · approx. €59

From the clos above the wall, vines planted between 1978 and 1985, picked at the end of September 2024, pressed straight away, a year on the lees in a Halbstück, a 600-litre cask, unfiltered, just under twelve per cent alcohol. Mandarin, raspberry, chalk, light tobacco, sea buckthorn. Galloni gave it 94 points, Jancis Robinson 17.5. The estate bottled 1,866 of them. With it, Arctic char.

Herxheimer Honigsack Spätburgunder 1G 2024

Pinot Noir · Herxheim am Berg, Erste Lage (1G) · approx. €41

240 metres up, on the escarpment of the Berntal, thirty centimetres of earth over limestone rock, vines from 2008. Seventy per cent whole bunches, ten days without pumping over, used barriques, twelve and a half per cent alcohol. Wild strawberry, raspberry, violet, morello cherry. Parker gave it 92 points. With it, pan-fried mushrooms.

Nakt, and a Sekt

“Nakt” is what Schumann calls the wines that go into the bottle without filtration and without sulphur. The Riesling 190 N.N. grows on a terraced vineyard where no tractor goes, and three vintages, 2018 to 2020, were fermented together on the skins. The Sekt comes only in magnum: old Riesling vines from the Schlossberg and younger ones from the Muschelkalk, bottled with Demeter beet sugar, riddled by hand, with no dosage, that is, no sugar added after disgorgement, and with no added sulphur from start to finish. It carries a vintage only if it has spent at least thirty months on the lees.

Odinstal Riesling 190 N.N. Nakt 2018-20

Riesling 190 N.N. [Nakt] 2018–20

Riesling · Pfalz, unsulphured · approx. €52

Twelve per cent alcohol, cloudy, with tannin from the skins. Vine peach, hibiscus, rooibos. Not a wine for every day, but for the days when you want to know what Riesling tastes like with nothing added at all. With it, goat’s cheese.

Odinstal Riesling Sekt Brut MMXXII 2022 Magnum

Riesling Sekt Brut MMXXII 2022, Magnum

Riesling · Pfalz, bottle-fermented · 1.5 l · approx. €67

Twelve and a half per cent alcohol, six grams of sugar left over from the fermentation in bottle. It is dry and taut, and you can taste the thirty months on the lees. Lobenberg gave it 96 points. A magnum pours ten to twelve glasses, enough for the start of an evening.

Where do you start?

With the 120 N.N., well chilled. The three 350s at ten degrees, the Muschelkalk and the Basalt at twelve. Take the GGs out of the fridge when you lay the table, and serve them in large glasses. The Honigsack likes sixteen degrees, no more.

The Clearing:
1× Riesling 120 N.N. 2024 → down in the valley
1× Weissburgunder 350 N.N. 2023 → walnut and salted caramel
1× Auxerrois 350 N.N. 2023 → Mirabelle plum and smoke
1× Gewürztraminer 350 N.N. 2023 → dry and slender
1× Riesling Muschelkalk 2023 → seashell and salt
1× Riesling Basalt 2023 → bitter orange and mint

And “Odinstal. The Best.”: the two Monopol GGs, the Himmelreich GG, the Honigsack, the Nakt and the magnum of Sekt. Open the magnum first.

One click adds all six to your basket. You can remove or swap individual bottles there.

We have twenty-six Odinstal wines and a marc brandy in the shop. Three that are in neither case: the Silvaner [Nakt] 2025 from the vineyard that has not been pruned since 2012, partly fermented in amphorae, ten per cent alcohol, approx. €26. The Riesling GG Monopol 2024, successor to the 2022, approx. €78. And the Riesling GG Monopol 2022 in double magnum, three litres, three in stock, approx. €330.

Living Wines team

P.S. More than a hundred years ago the first owners planted apple trees in the meadows. From their apples Schumann makes a Cidre Pét-nat 2023, seven per cent alcohol, bottled while still fermenting, without sulphur. Apple peel, fresh grass, hawthorn. Approx. €18, and last year our best-selling Odinstal, which surprised even us.
