Hello,
There are bottles you open.
And there are bottles that shape an entire evening.
I still remember my first double magnum vividly – a 1989 Châteauneuf-du-Pape at a dinner overlooking Hamburg's Alster lake. When the sommelier carried that three-litre bottle to our table, every conversation stopped. The gentle "pop" as it opened, the slow pour, the collective anticipation – it was pure theatre. But the best part came after: the wine had developed a complexity through its slow maturation in that large bottle that would have been unthinkable in a standard size.
Today, I'd like to show you why special bottle formats make the perfect gifts.
The Magic of Large Formats
Few things are more theatrical than opening a magnum at Christmas dinner. These 1.5-litre beauties aren't just visually impressive – wine ages perfectly in them. Clandestin's AUSTRAL Brut Nature 2019 (€185) is my insider tip – a purist Blanc de Noirs with zero dosage that shows what Champagne can do without makeup. Discover all our Champagne magnums here.
Things get really exciting with double magnums (3 litres): Odinstal's Auxerrois at €141 is a German gem at a bargain price. For Barolo lovers, Vietti's single vineyards are pure collector's dreams – especially the Ravera 2020 – these are wines your grandchildren will still be drinking!
The Giants: 5 and 6 Litres
The Brunello di Montalcino from Col d'Orcia in the 5-litre Imperiale (€279) – that's nearly seven bottles of one of Tuscany's greatest wines. And the absolute pinnacle: Nikolaihof's Steiner Hund Riesling 2017 in the very last 6-litre Methuselah. This biodynamic Wachau treasure is an investment for generations – or for one unforgettable evening.
The Physics Behind the Magic
The same amount of oxygen enters through every cork – but with double the volume (or more), it's distributed across far more wine. Ageing slows down, aromas develop more elegantly, and the wine stays vibrant longer. Add to that the significantly greater mass of glass, which provides better temperature stability and UV protection.
Small But Mighty: The Anti-Magnums
Half bottles are the anti-magnums – and that's exactly why I love them. These 375ml formats are my secret weapon for perfect wine pairings without excess. Picture this: a four-person dinner, three courses, three different wines – and nobody has to drink too much or choose between two wines.
Louise Brison's Côte des Bar (€25) as a sparkling opener, Vietti's Barolo (€34) with the main course – yes, you can treat yourself to a great Piedmontese without opening a full bottle! And for dessert? The divine Côtes du Jura Vin de Paille from Domaine Grand, whose sweetness is perfectly portioned in a half bottle. The beauty of it: these bottles mature faster than their larger siblings – perfect for impatient connoisseurs.
The Perfect Glass
Don't forget: a great wine deserves a great glass. Zalto glasses are legendary for good reason – their wafer-thin elegance makes every wine sing.
My tip for the holidays: Mix your formats! A Champagne magnum for the welcome, various halves to accompany the meal, and for New Year's Eve? That's when a double magnum is more than welcome!

P.S.: A regular bottle is something you bring along. A magnum is a gift. A double magnum is a statement.
