in the wonderful world of wine there are hidden jewels waiting to be discovered. One of them is the Blaufränkisch. This dark shade of red on the wine glass holds the secret of one of the noblest - and perhaps also oldest - red wine varieties in the world. And although it has been present for centuries, its star only really began to shine in the 1990s.

Roland Velich and his vision
Roland Velich, who together with his brother produced the first internationally recognised Austrian Chardonnay in the 1990s, Tiglat, quickly recognised the potential of Blaufränkisch. In 2000 he founded the Moric Winery and quickly advanced to become the maestro of Blaufränkisch.
The exact origin of Blaufränkisch remained mysterious for a long time. Today we know that the grape variety is a natural cross between the Blue Cinnamon grape and the White Heunisch. Its long presence in Austria and Hungary, as well as the 120 or so synonyms for the name, testify to its historical importance in the Pannonian plain. In Germany, the wine is known as Lemberger; in Hungary, as Kékfrankos.
History of a grape variety
Blaufränkisch was once firmly linked to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. But wars and political border demarcations challenged its prominent position. After the First World War, the structures in the wine world changed, directing the focus towards rather simple qualities. It was not until the end of the 1980s that Blaufränkisch found recognition again.
From Tiglat to the Moric Revolution
Roland Velich's origins from a family of winemakers in Burgenland influenced his path to the Moric winery. Discovering the beauty and history of viticulture inspired Velich to take Blaufränkisch, in particular, to a new level.
Velich's skills are already evident in the winery's simplest wine, the Private label. This wine is a blend of vintages and grape varieties, which is matured in the solera method. Moric wines are primarily characterised by complexity and elegance. Although Blaufränkisch plays the leading role, it is accompanied by a number of other varieties in the winery's range.
Sustainability and quality in the foreground
For Velich, quality is paramount, which is why only organically certified grapes are used in the wine cellar. The wines are processed naturally to preserve their authenticity. Excellent
Roland Velich has positioned Blaufränkisch between the great wine regions such as Burgundy, Piedmont and Northern Rhône. With maturity, not only its equality with the renowned regions becomes apparent, but also its uniqueness. The Moric winery and Roland Velich have contributed significantly to bringing this remarkable variety back into the limelight.
