Zetian is the first brand that Victoria Ordóñez secured even before her steep vineyard projects. It is the name of the first Chinese empress, once a concubine of the late emperor. Female rulers were not envisaged at the time, yet she was enthroned and was very popular with the people.
The wine comes from old vines of Montes de Toldeo and was originally produced only for the American market. The 2020 Zetian is available on the European market for the first time with this vintage.
Color
Dark ruby red with black core and violet reflections.
Nose
The Zetian, made from ancient Tempranillo vines from Tierra de Castilla, makes no concessions to modern wine tastes. Rather, its nose is reminiscent of old-style Tempranillo, which is increasingly rare today. Instead of chocolate cherry, there's a bit of stable to start, followed by Indian vadouvan and freshly tanned leather. Only then does the clear cherry fruit emerge, which is given an abysmal depth by mulberries.
Mouth
The 2020 Zetian Tempranillo Old Vines by Victoria Ordóñez oscillates between punk and pop. It also has its spicy side on the nose, which gives it that certain touch of history accompanied by tailored, contemporary beats. Fruit meets spice with youthfully polished tannins and fresh acidity. Well chilled, it provides Mediterranean Spain vibes at the barbecue at home.
