\nThe origins of Riesling at Clos Windsbuhl do not go back quite as far as those of the legendary Tokay, yet Riesling receives special attention at this estate. The outstanding ability of the Muschelkalk terroir - a Triassic-era dolomitic limestone - to quickly absorb heat determines the unique characteristics of the soil. The sparse surface layers allow the roots to quickly penetrate the limestone and thus enjoy excellent drainage. Riesling finds its home in the higher part of the Clos, where a southeast-facing, stony soil predominates. It is striking how the moderation and health of the grapes underline the refined and vertical expressiveness of the terroir, giving the wine consistency in its astringency and acidity even in different vintages.<\/p>\n
Wine production
\nIn 2021, the later budding of the Riesling also served as protection against frost damage and partially offset the effects of the rainy spring weather through the efficient drainage of the rocky soil. The Windsbuhl resists the effects of climate change and retains its role as one of the last vineyards to be harvested. Despite a strong but elegant acidity, its slow fermentation allows for complete drying. Despite the high acidity levels, it was possible to achieve a constant fermentation over a year, producing grapes that were rich in flavour, healthy and attractive, resulting in a precise, pure wine that can be stored well.<\/p>\n

Scent
\nThe 2021 Riesling Clos Windsbuhl awakens the senses with its unmistakable limestone note. The olfactory complex reaches its full development only with sufficient oxygen contact. The bouquet can be described as spectacular and enchanting, with notes of salt lemon, melon, red apple, lemongrass and ginger that work together harmoniously to affirm its precision.<\/p>\n
Taste
\nPithy and dry, its crystalline saltiness and sharp acidity deliver an immediate salivation. Its palate-pleasing quality creates a lingering, mouthwatering taste that begs for further tastings. Windsbuhl presents a Burgundy-like float on the palate. While the wine provides immediate pleasure, it contains impressive development potential - patience will be rewarded with even more intriguing and nuanced enjoyment. Those who cannot resist the craving should decant the wine and enjoy it from large Burgundy glasses at a mild temperature.<\/p>\n
