What characterises this Steiner Hund is its intense, almost tangible minerality - a direct expression of the barren primary rock in the eastern part of the site. The nose promises complexity and depth.

Palate

This is where the true class of this Riesling unfolds. Fruit and animating acidity form a beautiful harmony that is reminiscent of the best Wachau Rieslings. Remarkable are the fine Tannin notes - a rarity in Riesling, which give the wine additional texture and appetising structure. The tension between power and elegance is masterfully balanced.

Departure

Long, mineral and persistent. The finish unmistakably indicates considerable ageing potential - this wine still has its best years ahead of it.

Terroir & origin

The Steiner Hund vineyard above Stein an der Donau combines different terroirs: in the east, barren primary rock with little humus, in the west, loose deposits on terraced soils with a difference in altitude of 150 metres. The over 80-year-old vines in the lower western part add to the complexity. South to south-west exposure guarantees optimum ripeness.

Grape variety & vinification

Riesling from the biodynamic Nikolaihof. The batches are harvested and matured separately - partly in wood, partly in steel. The pre-blend was stored on the fine lees before the wine matured for four years in large, used wooden barrels. This patient vinification pays off in depth and harmony.

Food pairing suggestions

Pikeperch fried on the skin with roasted cauliflower, Sweetbreads with green asparagus or Parsnip dumplings with spicy plum sauce. The fine tannins also make it compatible with more sophisticated vegetable dishes.

Special features

Be sure to decant! This wine needs air to reveal its full complexity. At 12.5% alcohol, it remains elegant and easy to drink - a Riesling for connoisseurs that rewards patience.

The Steiner Hund Riesling dry 2017 from Nikolaihof in the Wachau is a mineral, precise wine from primary rock soils with impressive ageing potential.
