Info

According to its name, this Pinot Blanc comes from clay and marl soils in southern Styria. The vines are located in the best sites of the winery and have a vine age of 15-55 years. Perfect grapes were brought in in 2021. The winery itself has very high expectations for the 2021 vintage. With slightly lower yields, the quality of the harvest is sensational.

The Pinot Blanc fermented spontaneously and was then allowed to mature on the fine lees in steel tanks for 6-12 months. It was bottled without filtration.

Nose

From the Tements estate wine series, the 2021 Weissburgunder "Ton & Mergel" is racy and lean. In the manner of the Tements, it lives from herbal and yeasty components. At the same time, it presents itself cool and filigree. Lemon balm, a little thyme and parsley start the wine off. Freshly cut grass comes to the rescue. Yellow and green apples, freshly sliced, come to the fore alongside white peach. A touch of white bread crust adds a certain depth. Yeast plait and white currants now appear in the glass. Almonds and green papaya vie for dominance. Flint and a little wet chalk can be detected in a reserved manner. The reduction still lies like a film over the whole. A little air or time will fully reveal the aromas shortly.

Palate

At the very highest level, this estate wine shows us at what high quality level the basis can be. Varietal typicity far from opulence, breadth or boredom. A fine yeast melt provides an additional level on the palate. It shines with freshness and juiciness with very moderate acidity. 2021 "Clay & Marl" manages the balancing act of satisfying the broad masses but also picking up praise from discerning drinkers. The yellow to green fruit seems generously portioned. Crisp and pithy. The fresh herbal aroma enlivens it again and again with fresh accents. Very pleasant bitter notes provide intelligent drinking flow and clearly encourage more.
