Vital and full of tension in the minerality, it delivers a mixture of bright apple fruit, a little pear, salt lemon and herbs. The texture is silky and fine, the acidity present and almost demanding.

Wine information

The Welschriesling Old vines comes from the Ried Zieregg site, specifically from the so-called quarry with a high proportion of coral and shell limestone, where age-old Welschriesling vines stand. The wine was spontaneously fermented down to 1.1 grams of residual sugar. The Welschriesling was left on the fine yeast in neutral 500 tonneau for 18 months and was then bottled unfiltered.

Nose

The 2018 Vine Old Vines belongs to the very few more than remarkable Welschrieslings. The wine fascinates with its mixture of elegant fruit, tart hints of peel, herbs and floral scented notes. On the nose, the wine appears brilliant, fresh and also as yeasty as the base wine of a slightly oxidative aged Champagne. In addition, there are hints of nuts, some light tobacco and lime.

Palate

On the palate the 2018s Vine Old vines a paragon of complexity and juiciness, which is further enhanced by an ever-present saltiness. At the same time, the Welschriesling is fascinatingly elegant and profound. Its texture is silky and fine, its acidity present and almost demanding. Vital and full of tension in its minerality, it delivers a mix of bright apple fruit, a little pear, salt lemon and herbs. Again, a touch of sweet yeast shows in the otherwise bone-dry texture. Into the long finish, the Welschriesling comes across as spicy, salty and highly juicy.
