Wine information

Purple is in 2017 a cuvée of 25 % Cabernet Sauvignon and 75 % Cabernet Franc. The Cabernet Franc vines are 45 to 55 years old, the Cabernet Sauvignon vines 70 years old. The vines are planted in loamy-silty soil on sandstone as well as in red flint on tuffeau .

The yield is 35 to 40 hl/ha. The grapes were harvested by hand in 12-kilo crates. They were mostly destemmed and fermented over 30 days with only infrequent pumping over. The maturation then took place over twelve months on the fine lees in Burgundian Pièces from five to seven years. The cuvée then matured again for half a year in the piece barrel.

Nose

The Cuvée Violette from Clau de Nell opens with ripe as well as cool and classic Cabernet Franc notes of red and especially blackcurrants and blackberries, with tomato pepper essence, with a smoky and meaty note and further with a small dose of graphite and cedar wood. In addition, the wine seems extremely fresh and mineral lively.

Palate

On the palate the Purple Both creamy and silky in its texture as well as fresh and clear in its acid structure. Wonderful how intensively the ripe dark fruit makes its way here and remains so full of energy and freshness. Again, the groundedness of the varietals is evident in the powerful tannin structure and a flash of green but ripe notes. The finish becomes increasingly creamy and darkly fruity with plenty of blackberries and cassis.
