Tasting note from from 29.09.2022, Copyright Sebastian Bordthäuser

Artadis wines have been made from organically produced grapes since the 1980s, and the vineyards are now farmed biodynamically. After the Lacalle and Laorden families took over the winery at the beginning of the 1990s, a structural reorientation took place. This included leaving the Rioja producers' association, the reason why the term Rioja no longer appears on the labels despite the clear origin.

The Viñas de Gain Tinto is matured in traditional large oak barrels according to an old method. The grapes for this come from the vineyards of the villages Laguardia, Elvillar de Álava from the sites Castejones, Verdecillo, Carracuesta, El Cerradillo, Los Mazuelos, Las Ventas, Paulejas, Parredonda, Santa Águeda, Valmayor and Majadales.

Color

Purple red with violet reflections and black core.

Nose

The nose of the 2019 Viñas de Gain Tinto from Bodegas y Viñedos Artadi is initially spicy, with sandalwood, cedar, a little allspice and black pepper mingling with sweet aromas of vanilla and cloves. Only then does the dark fruit emerge, oscillating between fresh and confit. Black heart cherries, blackberries and mulberries as well as well-seasoned plum jam fill its fruit basket, cranberries and elderberries provide tart accents.

Mouth

On the nose, it is controlled by the ripe, medium pile tannins that give it its distinctive texture. With tangy grip, the tannins have a mouth-watering effect even before the super juicy ripe fruit enters the dance floor. Neatly parted, it is slenderly contoured and quick and agile on the palate despite its expansively generous fruit. Its rich extract, fine acidity and cool finish sing the song of modern Rioja, even if there is nothing about it on the cover.
