Deep purple, fading into violet - The nose of the 2017 Viñas de Gain already shows the typical character of the vintage, which clearly differs from the light, red berry and less tannic 2016. On the palate, the red Viñas de Gain is characterised by dark fruit that appears juicy, even savoury with its maturity and the acid structure that is nevertheless present.

Wine information

Artadis red Viñas de Gain is a local wine that comes from some of the best sites of Laguardia's vineyards such as San Martín, Las Ventas, Castejones, Ribaltayo or Viejo. The vineyards are located at 450 to 700 meters above sea level and are mainly characterized by clay in the topsoil and a limestone base. Although the wine comes from the centre of Rioja, you will find the term Rioja in vain since the 2015 vintage. Artadi has made his mark with the Consejo Regulador the Rioja overthrown because the quality claims of the board were considered to be too weak. Now, all wines are published as table wines. The grapes were harvested by hand in 10-kilo boxes. Fermentation was spontaneous after a 48-hour cold maceration and over 12 days in large stainless steel fermenters. The wine was aged for twelve months in the same French wood barrels where malolactic fermentation took place. The 2017 vintage was one of the most difficult in the region for a long time. First, there were late frosts on April 28 that destroyed a significant portion of the bloom, then high heat led to drought stress. Good for those with many old, deep-rooted vines, as is the case with Artadi. However, Artadi also had to suffer 25 % losses this year.

Nose

The Viñas de Gain The 2017 already shows the typicality of the vintage on the nose, which is clearly different from the light, red berry and less tannin-emphasized 2016. In 2017, one finds more dark fruit of wild berries, black cherries and plums, which seem warm and ripe and integrate naturally into the framework of fine wood. In the background, one finds spices such as cinnamon and vanilla, which further enhance the wine's elegance.

Mouth

On the palate the red Viñas de Gain Characterized by dark fruit, which appears juicy, even downright hearty with its ripeness and the nevertheless present acid structure. The tannin of the vintage is powerful and provides a very good basis for a longer storage. Nevertheless, Juan Carlos and his son Carlos López de Lacalle have managed to create a wine that is accessible and elegant right from the start, which is transparent and clear despite the opulent fruit and the use of wood.
