deep golden yellow with very fine mousseux

Of all the wines found at Larmandier-Bernier, the Vieille Vignes is the most opulent. It shows impressively where the journey goes at the Côtes de Blancs, if the Chardonnay is given the necessary time to mature. Brioche and butter fudge, vanilla, ripe pears, apricots and mirabelle plums are in the foreground; a touch of Virginia tobacco, some stone and wood provide the counterpoint in this wonderfully ripe and classic nose.

On the palate, the 2009 Vieille Vignes reveals an irrepressible, vibrant energy that is accompanied by a viscous, creamy texture and a full, generous volume. This Champagne has plenty of everything going for it: The stone fruit is ripe, almost sweet, the citrus bright and clear, and the long aging has given the Champagne a very fine yet defining mousseux. In addition, the chalky soil has provided not only the acidity but also the mineral vibrancy. Despite all the richness, the wine is immensely precise and complete. A fascinating Blanc de Blancs from the best Grand Cru sites of Cramant in the Marne department.

Food recommendations by Christoph Raffelt:

  • Fillet and farce of veal in puff pastry in champagne sauce and truffle broth
  • Sole and Norway lobster with glazed chicory and beurre blanc
  • Young catfish with steamed yellow beets, pollen and elderberry
