Wine information
Custero 2021 is a blend of nine autochthonous red and white wine varieties from Rioja. Especially in the Basque part of the growing region, where the Tentenublo winery is located, it is an old tradition to pick the grapes at the same time and ferment them together with the raisins. The spontaneous fermentation takes place in open vats, the grapes are crushed with the feet beforehand. Further short ageing takes place in used wooden barrels and concrete tanks. The result is a fresh and fruity young wine - known as "Cosechero" in Rioja - that is intended for quick consumption. The art lies in producing a wine that is easy to drink but not boring. The Custero is a prime example of this.
Color
Cherry Red
Nose
The wine has a nice freshness, the aroma is dominated by red fruits, especially cherry, and a peppery spiciness.
Palate
The Custero 2021 tastes red-fruited, has a medium body, soft tannins and a certain spiciness in the finish. It falls into the "easy-drinking" category, but compared to other Cosechero wines from Rioja - which often come along with a one-dimensional fruit dripiness - it has significantly more substance and depth to offer. Despite 14.5 per cent alcohol, the wine does not feel heavy at all, it always remains juicy and fresh and pulls away well in the best sense of the word.
