Wine information
This is one of the two Syrahs of Marlène Soria, one of the "best, craziest, most irrepressible winemakers of the whole Languedoc", as it says in the Vinum is called. It is certainly true that it takes a good deal of strength of character to age one's wines for more than ten years in large wood and in cement tanks before bottling them. But Marlène Soria is right about the results. The Léone is a Syrah fermented with a small amount of Mourvèdre. Both grape varieties are in the same vineyard on heavy clay soils.
Color
dark brick red with reddish brown edge
Nose
The Syrah Léone is the aromatically earthier of the two Syrah from Marlène Soria. That's no wonder; the soil is a bit fatter, and the side kick is Mourvèdre and not Grenache as in the case of the Clos de Cistes. Thus, a dense perfume of dark red to black berries, but above all of undergrowth, foliage, dry forest floor, stone, some rusty iron, leather and grilled herbs lies over the large glass in which the wine is swirled after it has been poured into a carafe. The wine seems closed and dense in itself, but opens up with plenty of time and air.
Palate
On the palate, the dark, earthy character is even more evident. Here, one rather has the impression of being in the Northern Rhône instead of in the Languedoc. The Syrah shows its full potential here, including the meaty and the stony-earthy. It is a powerful, even mighty wine, which has received another dark dimension through the Mourvèdre. With this Syrah one notices much more clearly than with the Clos de Cistes the ten years of maturity that this wine has behind it. And these mature notes are great fun, an asset for anyone who appreciates all those complex tertiary and balsamic notes. Also in 2008 the Léone another downright monumental wine.
