Frappato

Frappato di Vittoria or Frappato is an Italian red wine grape variety grown mainly in Sicily. As a grape variety, Frappato produces wines with a lean body and a distinct grape aroma. It is most commonly seen as a component of Sicily's only DOCG wine, Cerasuolo di Vittoria, which may consist of 30-50% Frappato and 50-70% Nero d'Avola.

An Italian DNA typing study published in 2008 showed a close genetic relationship between Sangiovese on the one hand and ten other Italian grape varieties on the other, including Frappato. It is therefore likely that Frappato is a cross between Sangiovese and another, as yet unidentified grape variety.
