Bacchus
Also known as: Bacchus is the name in both Germany and England.
Bacchus is a new crossing created in 1933 in the Pfalz from (Silvaner × Riesling) × Müller-Thurgau. The grape variety was named after the Roman god of wine and was intended to produce early-ripening, aromatic wines. In Germany it remains a marginal variety, mostly found in Franconia and Rheinhessen. More interesting is the variety’s second life in England, where it has established itself as one of the more successful crossings in the cool climate – with floral, slightly muscatel notes reminiscent of elderflower.
In our range, Bacchus is found primarily as a rarity from alternative growing regions.
