Info

Sophie is a Chardonnay dominated cuvée. Only 4% Viognier have a complementary effect. The grapes of the Sophie come in roughly equal parts from two sites. Lieben Aich, above Terlan, is about 300 metres above sea level, exposed to the west and rather warm. the loamy sandy soils are interspersed with porphyry weathered rock. In Mazzon near Kaltern, Chardonnay and some Viognier are grown on calcareous, loamy loess soils. The site is Manincor's steepest vineyard with a high gradient. The vines are exposed in a south-westerly direction and are located at 350-400m N.N..

The grapes are completely destemmed after harvest. A short maceration takes place for four hours in the press. Pressing is gentle and slow. Fermentation takes place in wooden vats of various sizes with natural yeasts. Maturation on fine yeast follows for another nine months.

Bottled in August 2021. 19,700 bottles produced.

Color

Bright lemon yellow, golden reflections

Nose

The nose is absolutely dominated by yellow fruits and flowers. Orange blossom, ripe oranges and candied zest. Also tangerines, tart and sour tangerine skin and apricots are clearly visible in the glass. Some toasted almond and a delicate note of beeswax. Green and yellow apples add fully ripe fruit to the fruit basket. Fresh garden herbs work delicately and balancing in the background. Wet stones, flint and the clear presumption towards minerality. The ageing in wooden barrels is totally restrained and leaves hardly any sensory traces. Sophie seems open and arouses curiosity.

Palate

2020 Sophie initially appears totally juicy and racy. Totally straightforward and full of finesse. Instead of showing off with power and pressure, it convinces with an enormous delicacy. The acidity is present, but perfectly in harmony with the delicate melting. This balancing act should be an indicator of good ageing potential. In terms of colours, it now jumps back and forth aromatically between yellow and green. The astringency is high and the drinkability is correspondingly good. Not even remotely fat. It lives from stoniness, minerality and a carefree lightness.
