Wine information
The Pinot gris comes from the Grand Cru site Sonnenglanz northwest of Beblenheim. The vineyard is 220 to 270 meters above sea level and faces south. The subsoil consists of tertiary conglomerate rock from the Rhine Graben with gravel and limestone as well as marl. This results in a heavy, very structured, stony and calcareous soil.
Color
deep straw yellow
Nose
The Grand Cru Sunshine opens with a dense and powerful, but clearly structured scent of kumquats and grapefruits, pineapple, melons and apricots, in which some spicy notes of ginger, galangal and laurel are mixed. On top is a delicate hint of anise, elderberry, rose and chervil.
Palate
The wine deserves more air than the bottle can provide, so off it goes into the decanter. With time and air the 2010 Sunshine then and swirls the ripe fruit of stone fruit, canned pineapple, mango and candied orange peel with the spice already described in the aroma. The wine seems semi-dry, the sweetness is balanced by the mineral structure and the stony saltiness of the wine. Both, minerality and salt, provide an impressive tension on the palate.
